Christian Gentry, Ph.D.

Christian Gentry works as a sound artist, composer, and performer in the Boston area. Most of his concert works are chamber or solo works that often incorporate fixed or live electronic elements. Some of his recent works were exhibited and/or performed at Ars Electronica (Linz) Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Mazmanian Gallery (Framingham State University), Akron Art Museum, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Verspiel (New Orleans), and Southeastern Louisiana University. As a sound artist Gentry collaborates with other musicians, artists, and poets. His sound design and mixing work for Rashin Fahendej's "A Father's Lullaby" was recently exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and received an Ars Electronica Award of Distinction in the Digital Musics and Sound Art category. Furthermore, Gentry and Fahandej workshopped this collaborative project at HUBWeek Boston (2018) and the Un/Sounding the Relational City Conference at New York University (2020). He also works as an improvising collaborator with visual artist, Tim McDonald, in their "Feedback Loop Project". Recent works include "Ellipsis #1" for trombone (William Lang) and live tape loops, “Insomnambularist” for mezzo-soprano (Megan Ihnen) and three noise oscillators, and "Punkt für Punkt" (ninety-nine aphorism for solo piano) for Jihye Chang which received its premier in October 2023. His work “Flux Flummoxed” for violin (Ben Sung) and piano (Jihye Chang) was released by Albany Records in 2013. Gentry also runs his own publishing and production company called Utazmaky Music. Under this label, he released "Delayed Transmissions" (2017, LP), "Stockpiles" (2019, LP), "Dorlómin" (2020, EP). Under the moniker, Maribo, he released “Meld" (2020, EP), "Winteretudes" (2020, EP), "half-mast" (2022, Single), and “Spectacle” (2023, LP).
Gentry received his training at University of Utah (BM), University of Louisville (MM) and Brandeis University (PhD). He is currently an Associate Professor of Music at Framingham State University teaching a variety of courses in electronic music composition, music theory, performance, history of rock/pop, and audio production.
