Jeff Hartman specializes in the history of medieval Europe, with a particular focus on Iceland and the North Atlantic world in the 14th and 15th centuries. His dissertation focuses on the shifting boundaries between agricultural and marine-based subsistence, and their effects on social and economic ties. His research has expanded to include an interest in the global cultural relationships between humans, animals, and nature. His teaching asks students to apply their own interests, scholarship, and experiences to different conceptions of the depiction and use of animals in wide-ranging aspects of modern and historical lives.
