The Gatepost Wins Three Mark of Excellence Awards

The Society of Professional Journalists presented the Region 1 winners of the annual Mark of Excellence collegiate journalism contest on April 10, and we are delighted to share that The Gatepost won three awards. The Mark of Excellence Awards honor the best of collegiate journalism. Region 1 is comprised of the New England and eastern mid-Atlantic states, and the awards recognized material published during the 2020 calendar year. The Society of Professional Journalists, founded in 1909, is the “nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.”

McKenzie Ward, a sophomore double major in English and History who is The Gatepost’s Opinions Editor as well as FSU’s Student Trustee, won the General Column Writing Award for Small Schools (fewer than 10,000 students) for three columns published during the 2020 calendar year.

Ashley Wall, a senior English major with a Concentration in Journalism who is The Gatepost’s Editor-in-Chief, received one of two Finalist Awards for COVID-19 Newspaper, Magazine, and Online Coverage for Small Schools for her article, “From competition to COVID.”

Donald Halsing, a junior English major with a Concentration in Journalism who is one of The Gatepost’s Associate Editors and Editor-in-Chief-elect for AY 2021-22, received one of two Finalist Awards for General News Photography for his photo, “A COVID-19 homecoming drive-in.”

As the winner of the General Column Writing contest for Region 1, McKenzie Ward will be entered into SPJ’s national Mark of Excellence contest with the award winners from other regions around the country. A panel of judges will announce the results of that competition in May.

What is the Earth Trying to tell us?

By Soren Colstrup

Ten years ago, Dr. Vandana Singh, a professor of physics at FSU and a science fiction writer, began a journey for answers to what the Earth is trying to tell us.

In her lecture, The Unraveling of the World, Dr. Vandana Singh discussed her passion for learning about climate science, and teaching it to her students in her physics courses.

Singh has traveled many miles in the name of climate science, with trips spanning from Northern Alaska, where she studied the melting of the Arctic Sea Ice, to Jharkhand, India, one of the most climate vulnerable regions in the world.

Singh said, “My first exploration was on April 14, 2014, in Northern Alaska, where I learned about the rapid melting of sea ice. I started to think more about the places which are most vulnerable.”

According to Singh, her climate research trips have provided her with a plethora of knowledge of the land because of her interactions with climate scientists and indigenous people.

Before beginning her lecture, Singh fittingly acknowledged the land from which she was speaking, which was previously occupied by the Nipmuc tribe.

“Climate change is an issue of justice. The people who cause the most destruction and damage often do not bear the effects,” said Singh.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has warned that we have entered a ‘Pandemic era’, because of climate change, which suggests that things may never return to normal.

According to Singh, the best response to this problem is education and a collective effort to combat climate change.

“I think that we have to be careful to not overwhelm children with the bad news, without getting away from how serious [climate change] is. It’s also really important to get away from individual solutions. Buying a Prius is not going to solve climate change. We have to work collectively,” said Singh.

Teaching in color is more than skin deep. When you look at a beautiful painting, it is not the result of a singular color, but rather the symphony of colors working together to produce the masterpiece. Our students are the masterpieces. They are all more than skin deep or a singular color. Teaching in color allows you to see yourself and others for more than the primary colors that society exploits. When we learn how to see color, we can begin to truly educate the child in a more meaningful and permanent way. Though race is the dominant color, it does not have to be the defining one. Being able to address ALL their colors, allows our students to be receptive to the education and ensures a better learning environment/experience.

Jennifer Hedrington is the 2021 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year. She has been teaching for 16 years. While attending Law School, she found her calling to become an educator. Her teaching philosophy is teaching in color through the lenses of love, which allows her to educate the whole child while celebrating the uniqueness of each student. Jennifer understands that teachers are a powerful motivating force in the lives of students and have the ability to shape society's next superhero or villain.
