A Unique Partnership of Related Fields for Future Chemists
Chemistry is fundamental to our world, and is essential for meeting our basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, health, energy, clean air, water, and soil. Understanding chemistry provides an
excellent basis for understanding the physical universe we live in.
Come experience a pairing of two complementary fields, providing Food Science majors with an exceptionally strong background in chemistry and equipping Chemistry and Biochemistry majors with the opportunity to take electives in more applied areas such as food chemistry, food analysis, and food engineering.
You can choose from the following majors within our department:
Our program is focused on undergraduate students, preparing you to graduate as a Biochemist, Chemist or Food Scientist ready for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, biotech, analytical laboratories, graduate school (PhD and MS programs) and health science programs such as medical and dental school and physician associate programs.
You will be encouraged to pursue an undergraduate research project with a faculty mentor at FSU. In addition, there are opportunities early on to develop lab skills as a paid lab assistant in the teaching labs. Off campus, you could pursue an internship at a local industrial sites and secure work with major biotech and pharmaceutical companies such as AbbVie, Alpha Analytical, Meadowhawk Biolabs, and more.
The Department has nine chemistry teaching labs and several dedicated research labs. We are proudly certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).
