Program & Admissions Requirements
The degree requires the successful completion of ten (10) courses, which are divided into four (4) core courses, four (4) content courses, two (2) curriculum-specific courses, and an oral comprehensive examination. The professional portfolio, based upon the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Professional Standards for Teachers and Subject Matter Knowledge requirements, must be completed and submitted to the M.Ed. Elementary Education advisor at least one week prior to the oral comprehensive examination. The examination is taken in the last semester of study.
*This may be waived for candidates who meet the proficiency requirements upon admission.
- Four (4) elective graduate content courses approved by the program advisor. Choose from the following academic disciplines: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Earth System Science, English, English as a Second Language, World Languages, Geography, History, Literacy, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, or any courses offered under the area of STEM.
Choose two (2) of the following:
- EDUC 927 Advanced Teaching Strategies
- ENGL 930 Workshop in Children’s Literature
- INST 941 Internet for 21st Century Teaching and Learning
- INST 943 Impact of Technology on Education
- INST 951 Mathematics Instruction with Technology
- SPED 956 Curriculum Development and Modification
- SPED 962 Developmental Patterns of Children with Moderate Disabilities
- Complete the online graduate admission application
- Have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Teach or assist in a Massachusetts public school grade 1-6 general education classroom
- Have a minimum undergraduate quality point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
- Provide two letters of recommendation submitted on the Framingham State University Letter of Recommendation form and sent directly to the University’s Graduate Admissions office by the recommender. One letter must be from an employer or supervisor, and the other must be from a faculty member who has taught the candidate at the collegiate level if the candidate attended classes in the last five years;
- Submit a typed, 300-word personal statement discussing their motivation for seeking a master’s degree in view of prior formal education, current job responsibilities, and career plans.
