The ceremony recognizes a transformational gift of more than $2 million from Thomas and Joan Eames
Framingham State University will welcome students, faculty, alumni, and community members next Friday, April 17th, to celebrate a significant moment in the University’s history - the renaming of Hemenway Laboratories in honor of Professor Emeritus Thomas Eames and his wife, Joan.
The ceremony recognizes a transformational gift of more than $2 million from the Eames family, establishing an endowed fund that will support students, faculty, and programs in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for generations to come.
For President Nancy Niemi, the event is both a celebration of generosity and a reflection of Framingham State’s mission.
“This is about opening doors for students,” said Niemi. “Tom and Joan’s extraordinary gift ensures that future generations of Rams will have access to the tools, experiences, and support they need to succeed in STEM fields.”
For more than four decades, Thomas Eames taught chemistry and food science at Framingham State, shaping the academic journeys of countless students.
The newly named Professor Thomas and Joan Eames Laboratories is home to 16 teaching labs serving biology, chemistry, and food science students - spaces designed for hands-on discovery, collaboration, and innovation.
Beginning in fiscal year 2027, the Eames endowment will provide annual funding to the College of STEM, supporting everything from student financial assistance to faculty research and program innovation. The endowment enables the University to respond directly to student needs - helping reduce financial barriers and expand opportunities for experiential learning.
