Making an Impact on the Next Generation of Nurses
My name is Laura O’Keefe and I have worked as a cardiac stepdown nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital for the past five years. I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Science in Nursing program with a concentration in Nursing Education at Framingham State University. I decided to pursue this degree to further develop my leadership and teaching skills. I hope to utilize the tools I gain from this program to advance my career and make an impact on the next generation of nurses.
I was first introduced to FSU's MSN program from the rave reviews of a few of my colleagues who had previously gone through the program. After looking into many different MSN programs, I chose FSU for its resourceful faculty, campus diversity, and flexible hybrid class format.
The faculty in this program are knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated - always wanting to see their students succeed. They are also very understanding of the busy nature of their students who are often balancing full-time jobs and families while pursuing their degree.
Our classwork includes in-class discussions, presentations, debate simulations and guest lecturers. Each class has exposed me to relevant materials and real-life applications that I can learn from and bring back to my nursing practice. In this program there are students pursuing a career in nursing academia and others looking to grow in professional development in the clinical setting. What I love most about this program is that the faculty seamlessly blend the curriculum to expose students to information pertinent to both of these career paths. I have also had the opportunity to learn from my classmates who have varied professional backgrounds and experiences from differing specialties and healthcare systems. Through this, I have gained immeasurable resources and tools to integrate into my practice as a future nurse educator.
This program is preparing me with the skills to succeed in my future endeavors as a nurse educator.
