Trevena Rice broadens her impact with Nursing Leadership Degree

My name is Trevena Rice, and I’m currently pursuing my Master of Science in Nursing with a Leadership concentration at Framingham State University. I first learned about FSU through its affiliation with Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where I work, and an informational session completely changed the course of my professional journey. That’s where I met Dr. Lisa Thomas. She was warm, welcoming, and truly made all the difference. We later sat down together to talk through my goals and what I hoped to achieve with my MSN degree. At the time, I was torn between leadership and education, unsure which path to follow, but that conversation helped bring clarity to a decision I had been struggling with.

I currently work at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and earning this graduate degree will allow me to broaden the impact I have on women of color, both within the hospital and throughout the community. With advanced training, I’ll be better equipped to advocate for equitable care, elevate the voices of women who are often unheard, and create pathways for support, education, and empowerment. This degree isn’t just a professional step forward; it’s a commitment to making sure women of color receive the compassionate, informed, and culturally responsive care they deserve.

What I love most about the MSN program at FSU is the exposure it provides. I attended my very first leadership conference and even wrote letters to my state legislature, a skill that turned out to be incredibly valuable, because shortly afterward I found myself writing several more to advocate for my community. This program hasn’t just expanded my knowledge; it has expanded my reach.

Framingham State’s hybrid program is excellent. The nursing instructors create a learning environment where working professionals can succeed and flourish. I believed I was a nurse with a “small voice,” but FSU’s MSN program has amplified that voice, giving me the confidence and clarity to speak up, advocate, and lead.
