Connected and Climbing
Before Jornell Abadia ’23 arrived at Framingham State as a first-year student, support for his career was already in place. Knowing Professor of Marketing Sandra Rahman was his advisor felt like having a welcoming place to land. Freshman year, Abadia dropped by during Rahman’s office hours. As a sophomore, he continued to share his aspirations.
“I made a continuing effort to cultivate a good rapport,” he says.
Junior year, as he looked for an internship, rejection started to weigh on him. Rahman assisted him in securing a paid summer internship with a tech startup affiliated with the Harvard Innovation Labs. As Abadia entered his senior year, searching for a permanent role, he reached out to Rahman. She connected him with Career Counselor Emily Abel. Abel helped Abadia refine his interview skills, polish his resume and apply to the Project OnRamp program. He secured a paid internship with MassBio. By the end of the internship, the company hired him full-time right out of school.
"FSU taught me how to build relationships to further my career," Abadia says. "As an alumnus at my first job post-graduation, I’m always connecting with new people. I’m still in touch with old colleagues, now at new companies that I can add to my network.”
In 2024, Abadia took the next step in his career, accepting a position as a Marketing Specialist at international financial products company Direxion.
