Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch my housing status from commuter to resident, or from resident to commuter?

Yes, and there's no deadline to make the change. Living on campus requires a deposit, so if you'd like to switch from commuter to resident, start by contacting Admissions. If you switch from resident to commuter, you'll forfeit your deposit.

Can I request a single room?

Single rooms are limited, so first-year students generally aren't assigned one. Most singles go to returning students through room selection, based on seniority. After you move in, you can ask the Office of Residence Life to add you to its single-room wait list. Learn more about housing on the Residence Life and Housing page.

Does FSU offer a tuition payment plan?

Yes. Semester payment plans spread your bill over monthly installments. Fall plans run July–November (5 months) or August–November (4 months); spring plans run December–April or January–April. A $40 enrollment fee applies per semester, with payments due on the first of each month through the student e-pay portal.

Can I bring a car to campus?

Yes. Resident and commuter students can both bring a car, as long as it displays a valid FSU parking permit. Order your permit online through the parking permit portal once sales open for the year. Every commuter who orders a permit gets one, but resident permits are limited and sold first-come, first-served, so order early. Resident students park in the Union Lot, and commuter students park in the Maple and Salem End lots, with a shuttle from Maple. See the Parking FAQ for permit costs, lot details and ordering dates.

I paid my deposit. What are my next steps?

Congratulations! Next, log in to your applicant status page and work through your enrollment checklist. Then register for orientation. Black and Gold Beginnings, a three-day program just before classes begin, is required for all new first-year and transfer students. Before your first semester, you and your family can also attend a Taking Care of Business session to finish paperwork with campus offices in person. And if you haven't yet, complete the FAFSA.
