Early College

In 2017, the Boards of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Department of Higher Education (DHE) of Massachusetts approved the Early College Initiative to expand college access and credit accrual, statewide. Early College provides college courses during the school day to partner high schools.

Our programs are aligned to the State’s Early College designation process, which is centered around five common pillars:

          1) Equitable Access

          2) Guided Academic Pathways

          3) Enhanced Student Support

          4) Connection to Career

          5) Effective Partnerships

We believe that it is critical to ensure that the Early College scholars have a program of study that is culturally and developmentally responsive, anti-racist, sequentially but flexibly designed, incorporative of learning experiences both in and outside of the classroom as well as, engaging and affirming.

Courses are designed to be engaging, inclusive, and culturally relevant. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, explore their interests, and build leadership skills along the way.

The CPC currently partners with three high schools in the MetroWest region. Students enrolled in the Early College program also receive academic support, college and career planning, and can participate in a wide variety of leadership opportunities.

College Planning

The CPC offers residents of the MetroWest region free college planning and advising. Our College Planning Program supports students through the college enrollment process by providing guidance on building a college list, completing applications, applying for financial aid, reviewing financial aid award letters, and taking the next steps toward their educational goals.

Dual Enrollment

The CPC offers dual enrollment courses through Framingham State University as part of the Commonwealth Dual Enrollment Partnership (or CDEP). Dual enrollment courses allow eligible high school students the opportunity to enroll in college courses for credit.

Please visit the CDEP webpage for information on eligibility.

Middle School Engagement

College and career readiness involves a complex set of mindsets and skills that are best acquired slowly and intentionally over time and that focus not only on academic preparedness but on self-regulatory and social-emotional skills. With this in mind, the CPC engages with students as early as middle school. We know that middle schoolers who perceive a future-oriented and supportive school environment exhibit higher engagement and academic outcomes. Yet even ambitious adolescents often lack the structured support needed to make informed decisions about their futures. The early adolescent period then is an ideal entry point for structured college and career readiness work.

Dream Catchers is an early intervention model that nurtures college-going mindsets, innovation, and decision-making skills, as well as career awareness and exploration before students transition to high school. Specifically, Dream Catchers helps young people:

1) Learn how to be successful learners inside and outside of school in order to build academic confidence and success.

2) Identify their strengths and passions so they can chart a path through high school and college that nourishes those strengths and passions while exploring and developing new ones.

3) Be exposed to the vast, interconnected possibilities between academic subjects taken in high school and college, and industry sectors.
