Mazmanian Gallery is thrilled to present an exhibition of new work by artist Cathy Della Lucia. Her work explores issues related to Asian American identity, un(belonging) and inheritance through the collection and imitation of tools, toys, and weapons that have a habitual tactile connection with the body. This exhibition brings together wood, ceramic, and digitally fabricated components generated from drawings done in grocery stores and in front of refrigerators over the past year.

Reciprocity: Faculty Exhibition

Exhibition: February 26 – April 5, 2025
Reception: March 3, 2025, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Mazmanian Gallery is pleased to present Reciprocity, an exhibition that features work by faculty from the Department of Art, Design, & Art History. Teaching and learning art are deeply reciprocal endeavors. When it works well, the process is a fluid exchange of creativity between students and teachers. Faculty set out to create conditions for students to learn to develop skills and express themselves visually. Students arrive with curiosity and passion, and their work generates questions that propel learning. Answers to these questions emerge through studio practice and hands-on experimentation, by students and faculty. As art teachers, much of the knowledge we bring to our teaching was learned through years of studio work. When a student’s inquiry demands that we think in new ways in order to assist them, we often return to our studios to find new ways to teach. This process can have the unintended, but lovely, consequence of developing our creative work in new ways. And students learn from witnessing teachers model continued learning as an essential aspect of art-making. And so, the reciprocal circle continues.

The opportunity for faculty to share their creative work is a wonderful part of this academic exchange. The Department of Art, Design, & Art History includes faculty who specialize in a wide range of materials, creative discourses, and approaches. The participating artists include: Robert (Bob) Alter, M Cataldo, Marc Cote, Jennifer Dowling, Christian Gentry, Marcus Greene, Stephanie Grey, Polly Marie Hensel, Ellie Krakow, Tim McDonald, Yumi Park Huntington, Carol O’Malia, Laura Osterweis, Bahareh Safarani (The Safarani Sisters), Ruth Scotch, Leslie Starobin, Keri Straka, and Paul Yalowitz.

Students in the department of Art & Music at Framingham State University are immersed in a collaborative, innovative and interdisciplinary learning environment which focuses on academic excellence in the areas of visual art, design, history, and art education

As part of a liberal arts institution, the faculty encourages hybrid and tangential relations with other fields as a way of aiding the student in identifying the most effective way to articulate their individual vision. The program is structured to help students to pursue creative endeavors while also imparting specific skills appropriate to the various disciplines. Students who graduate with a degree in Studio Art select a concentration from Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Painting, Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture.

The Capstone Experience in the Department of Art, Design, & Art History is designed to support students to work intensively on creating a cohesive body of work in their chosen concentration. Through their final year of study, students receive feedback on this work from their peers, faculty, and professionals in the field. The degree culminates with a public exhibition in Mazmanian Gallery.
