Background Information
In 2017, the Boards of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Department of Higher Education (DHE) of Massachusetts approved the Early College Initiative to expand college access and credit accrual, statewide. Early College provides college courses during the school day to partner high schools.
Our programs are aligned to the State’s Early College designation process, which is centered around five common pillars:
1) Equitable Access
2) Guided Academic Pathways
3) Enhanced Student Support
4) Connection to Career
5) Effective Partnerships
We believe that it is critical to ensure that the Early College scholars have a program of study that is culturally and developmentally responsive, anti-racist, sequentially but flexibly designed, incorporative of learning experiences both in and outside of the classroom as well as, engaging and affirming.
Courses are designed to be engaging, inclusive, and culturally relevant. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, explore their interests, and build leadership skills along the way.
FSU currently partners with three high schools in the MetroWest region. Students enrolled in the Early College program also receive academic support, college and career planning, and can participate in a wide variety of leadership opportunities.
