Fresh Check Day shines a light on student mental health

By Cas Barrett, publications intern

SEALs Peer Health educators hosted their 7th annual Fresh Check last Wednesday.

The McCarthy Center Forum was filled with 18 booths, from student clubs to mental health resources on and off campus all dedicated to improving mental health.

“It’s a mental health promotion and suicide prevention fair with interactive fun booths, each with a different message on how to improve health and well-being on campus. Common mental health struggles students face would include loneliness or students feeling isolated, anxiety, depression, and issues around substance misuse,” Pam Lehmberg, Coordinator of Wellness Education and Health Promotion said.

“We partner with the Jordan Porco foundation, along with hundreds of other schools' nationwide on April 9th each year, this is our 7th year so far,” Lehmberg added.

The event combines student-led activities with access to mental health resources and professionals.

Art club offered puzzle piece coloring exercises asking students to reflect on how they relax and what hobbies they have, and another table offered ceramics painting. Department or outreach-based tables offered an information overview of their programs and resources with free merchandise and snacks.

Students were given a card with stamp spots and asked to get five5 stamps minimum before answering a survey for a chance to win AirPods or a weighted blanket.

Booths this year included the Rams Resource Center, Outing club, the Center for Inclusive Excellence, Call to Talk, and Voices Against Violence, among many others.
