Food and Nutrition Studies Concentration

The American food scene has transformed how and what we eat. More than ever, nutrition and food professionals are needed to educate, motivate, and guide people of all ages and backgrounds to achieve and maintain health and wellness.

Coursework includes: nutrition science, foods and society, wellness, counseling, foodservice systems, management, community nutrition, computer applications, and addictive behaviors.  The recipe for success in the Nutrition and Food Studies concentration includes a supervised internship in your senior year. Together with a faculty member, you will identify a placement that appeals directly to your interests and aspirations. 

The Nutrition and Food Studies concentration can lead you to an exciting career path in health and wellness fields.  You will be prepared to work in a wide variety of programs, organizations, and businesses.  Our graduates have found employment as:

  • Health coaches for health insurance companies and fitness programs
  • Nutrition counselors in the Women, Infants and Children Food Program
  • Nutrition educators in UMASS Cooperative Extension program and YMCAs
  • Public and private school child nutrition directors
  • Greater Boston Food Banks as leaders in food access and member services
  • Foodservice managers in residential and health care agencies for seniors and other commercial food service companies

While a minor is not required, most of our students select a minor to enhance their learning and get them ready for a wider variety of careers.  You can easily add coursework in: psychology, Spanish, business, marketing, anthropology, computer science, professional writing, and more.
